Ekoostik Hookah
ekoostik hookah

One of the most original and energetic acts around today, ekoostik hookah is the nucleus of a family drawn to its lucid, improvisational treatment of psychedelic rock ’n’ roll, blues, funk, jazz and bluegrass layered with rich harmonies. Born early in 1991 in a smoky basement bar, the band has been continually evolving, cultivating a sound that has perked the ears of contemporaries and attracted fans who travel miles to hear them play.

The Ohio-based band began jamming during weekly open-mic nights when vocalist/keyboardist Dave Katz, lead guitarist Steve Sweney, bassist Cliff Starbuck and guitarist/vocalist John Mullins had full-time gigs with popular bands. The ensemble quickly found a following and began this odyssey when a stranger who heard them at a party bankrolled a trip to the studio to record Under Full Sail. By the end of recording, band members had committed themselves full-time to ekoostik hookah. Drummer Eric Lanese joined in 1993. Since then, the band has undergone a few changes in personnel, including the departure of Starbuck and the addition of bassist Phil Risko and the departure of John Mullins and addition of guitarist/singer/songwriter Eric Sargent in 2010. ekoostik hookah has always independently handled every aspect of its growth.

Mike Perkins
Mike Perkins
I hear music everywhere. Always have. Beats and melodies are constantly swirling around in my head. Although I technically write my own songs, I feel like it's more accurate to say that I find them. I often hear songs in my dreams, wake up, and then hurry to my guitar before the subtle nuances of the music escape me. I also enjoy noticing rhythms in the physical world. Whether it's a pattern in the clouds, bands of wind blowing across a field of tall grass, birds talking to each other, the changing of the seasons, a crackling campfire, babies turning into old people, or the sound of my dogs snoaring, rhythm is EVERYWHERE. On stage, I feel like a kid that gets to play on an infinite jungle gym..... always finding something new to swing on or climb. When playing music, the only limitation is your imagination. You can go anywhere you want. I think that's why I tend to sing with my eyes closed. I feel like my best songs are still ahead of me, but that's probably what every musician thinks. Otherwise, the "jungle gym" would start to get boring.

I've been making music for as long as I can remember. I never felt as though I had a choice. It just came naturally. I thought everyone made-up songs. It was hard to believe when I found out different. I fell in love with all music. No matter how those 12 notes were played, no matter what genre, I wanted to be part of it. I discovered the piano when I was three. That would be the starting point for me. I
thought the piano was the most magnificent thing in the world.  It wasn't a toy and I understood that from the beginning. I knew this was going to be a serious and wonderful relationship for the rest of my life.

The Groove Prophets
The Groove Prophets
Blues, funk, reggae, psychedelic and rock influences combine to create a band beyond classification. From the sweet mellow sounds of southern rock to the wild, chaotic psychedelic freekouts, the Groove Prophets move like a swift vessel of hope in a music world dominated by mediocrity…a rhythmic, harmonic and lyric tye-dye across a dark, bland and grey world. The only way to experience this unique creation is to dive in, to become a part of the ever-evolving universe of sound, light, and near ritualistic dance, and ultimately to become a part of the show itself- a mix of music, intoxication of the senses, and a colorful array of people that range from weird to wild. The force that drives the celebration is the Groove Prophets. Drawing from classic rock and psychedelic pioneers such as the Grateful Dead, The Doors, and the Band, as well as jam heavyweights such as Phish, Widespread Panic, Moe., and the Black Crowes, and even entering the weird realm of bands like The Mars Volta, Ween and Tool, The Groove Prophets experiment within a unique structure. There is no limit to how far the music can be taken. At the helm of this musical vehicle is the rhythm section of Jim Fultz and Brandon Pappas. With thundering drums and percussion, they shape the backbone of this unit. The powerful bass of Tony Quintus moves the band into a new funky dimension, while the triple threat attack of Josh Riley’s keys/organ/synth combo add an ethereal layer to the mix. The prolific writing/arranging/rhythm guitar playing of Don Gordon add intelligence and direction, while the face melting guitar acrobatics of Ryan Bunetta set the group afire. Join us as we see just how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Salazar and Papania met at Friends Music Camp in 2009 and starting playing folk and bluegrass together on the streets soon after. When Scott joined them one day with a borrowed harmonica, having never played the instrument before, the nucleus of Wheels was formed. Salazar plays 9 other instruments outside of the band, including piano, tuba, and trombone. Papania also plays cello and bass and will soon be adding banjo to the band. All three of the band members play djembe (African drum) with Scott adding the steady beat to a few songs. Starting out playing at open mic nights at Peach's Grill, the band got their first break when Mindy and Patrick "Brother Bear" Harney, the owners of Brother Bear's Coffeehouse in Yellow Springs, invited them to play at the first series of "BearFoot Boogie" dance parties they sponsored for the community. At the Peach's open mic nights, the band also met Scott Blaze and Bear Wright, known to their fans as Full Circle. The Soul Rebels
The Soul Rebels
Soul Rebels is a reggae/dub/jamband erupting with positivity and blessed with creativity. All the members are based in the mult-I-far-I-ous community of Yellow Springs, OH. Our influences start with early reggae and traverse the musical globe. Scott, the drummer has a passion for trees. John, lead guitarist, works the earth to feed the masses. Bass player (Papa Iri Dreadlocks) plays with a guitarist’s passion and rhythm guitarist/vocalist, Jony Dreds comes with a message to share. Rounding out the band are Marnie, keyboardist and owner of Starflower Natural Foods, and Sister Iria Organica, chanting mother of three whose inspiration and wisdom enlighten us all! Our energy on stage is infectious. We bring a positive vibe that will elevate your mind and make you want to move your waist!

Ointment
Ointment
Ointment is a power-trio lurching its way through a near-constant state of gritty improvisation in search of high points. We play cathartic jams with the intent to blow open our pipes, release the mundane toxins that build up over the workweek, and if all goes well scare ourselves to death. We resist the temptation to sing the song, instead building elastic strands of transitional phrases that are as full of recoveries as they are crescendos. Pat McHugh is a locomotive breathing down our backs, driving his drum kit into submission. Sol is a madman on the thunder bass, coaxing the solar plexus into spastic joy. Tim Callahan’s guitar work reflects his ongoing effort to work off the debt owed to his very own devil, resulting in searing surgical peeling of the lower brain stem. Ointment is occasionally a creamy shotgun shell, rarely a soothing balm, and not necessarily medicinal.

Full Circle
Full Circle
Full Circle began as a band on April 20th, 2007.  The musician line up has always been the same.  Today, guitarist Blaze Wright takes care of almost all of the lead and some of the rhythm work.  He has been known to jump in on harmonica, percussion, violin, mandolin, saxophone, ukulele and bass.  He writes, using piano as well as his other instruments and sings lead and harmony vocals.  Harmonica Boss, Nicklas 'Bear" Wright takes care of blues/groove duties on harp and also doubles on percussion.  Bear sings lead and harmony vocals and also plays bass on some of the songs in the band's repertoire.  He writes using guitar and ukulele as well as bass.  The boys are 4th generation harmonica players.  Scotty Wright, the father, is a harmonica player turned rhythm guitarist for Full Circle.  He plays rhythm behind the band and sometimes a bit of lead.  He sings lead and harmony vocals and can also be caught sometimes playing a bit of harmonica now and then.  The band tries to create a 'Ride' with every set and has spent the last few years on the road nearly every weekend playing in Ohio and Michigan.  Each Full Circle show flier is unique and features a different, fictitious production company in tribute to friend/poet John Deselem.  In 2009-2010 the band had an opportunity to contribute to a motion picture soundtrack.  They recorded three songs for the independent film "The Line Shack", two originals and one traditional, all instrumental. In the spring of 2010 Full Circle asked Wheels to be their opening act and both bands took to the road and became a part of each others' energy as Wheels exploded onto the scene.  The bands would play together as one at every show in between the two sets.  Local Yellow Springs disc jockey Clean Gene Lohman has run sound for the band nearly from the start and has become a part of the bands' family as well as its history.  The boys' mother, Rachel Litteral, frequently turns up at shows as a guest vocalist, lending her lead and harmony vocals to many a show.  Scott Stolsenberg has been onboard as a photographer since June of 2007.  He has taken countless pictures of the band, both onstage and candidly and his work is well documented on the band's fliers and soon on a t-shirt as well.  The band has survived the road through perseverance, dedication and the efforts of friends, who have become family and who are always there to help carry equipment, lend support in countless ways, and sometimes even point the way to the next show.   YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND WE LOVE YOU!
